Fontodi Flaccianello Supertuscan Vertical Tasting back to 1995 Vintage Saturday July 27th 7:30pm and all the Fontodi in the store on SALE!!
If reassurances could dull pain, nobody would ever go to the trouble of pressing grapes.
SCOTT LYNCH, The Lies of Locke Lamora
The Manetti family has owned Fontodi since 1969 but has been in Chianti for centuries. Though they have always made wine, their primary business is still the production of Chiantii´s finest terracotta at their factory in Ferrone. Giovanni Manetti has run the property since 1980 and ensures the wines are as meticulously made as the vineyards are immaculately tended. Their 80 hectares of vineyard, 90% of which are Sangiovese, are situated in the prime i´concadi´oroi´ (golden shell) of Panzano, and over the past decade these have been converted to organic viticulture. Giovanni is now following biodynamic principles to obtain the best quality fruit. There are 80 hectares of south facing vineyards, all of which are found in an amphitheatre-shaped valley to the south of Panzano. This shape facilitates the full ripening of the grapes. The stony galestro soils allow for excellent drainage and encourage the vines to put down deep roots.
I just had the 1995 Flaccianello at the Wine Bar a few weeks ago and it was spectacular!! This wine is fully mature now and is a quintessential example of a great vintage Sangiovese based wine from Tuscany. The 1996 was also still incredibly fresh and lively and I bet you could hold on to it for another 10+ years. After last year’s tasting I decided to make this an annual event as there is no better way to spend an evening than with 10 vintages of Flaccianello and therefore we will offer our “Wine Drinking people” this opportunity every year until I have no more Flaccianello to drink!!
This tasting features Fontodi’s flagship wine (100% Sangiovese based) Flaccianello going back to the 1995 vintage we like this wine so much we have many selections in magnum, 3 liter format and now up to 15 liters! Flaccianello was a single vineyard wine up until the 2004 vintage when they replanted the vineyard then it became a selection of the best Sangiovese from the entire property. We feel it is one of the best wines made in Tuscany and will be drinking as many bottles as we can!
In fact, we have one of the largest selections of Fontodi wines on the planet earth so check out everything that we have in the store on this offering after the information about this tasting. The fee for this tasting which includes dinner is $295 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

A bit about Fontodi:
In the beginning there were Fontodi bricks and tiles. The work comes from fonte di odo, which means a place rich with water. Brunelleschi’s Florentine cupola was restored with Fontodi tiles. Ancient and modern day Florentine homes use Fontodi tiles for decoration and for their natural warmth. The same family made the bricks that pave the Uffizi Galley in Florence. This family with the same hand and the same will has also been involved with the wine but for a shorter time. It was Maria, the mother, who took an active part in the winery. She first got the family interested in wine They purchased the winery in 1968, and by 1980 the had moved there from Panzano. It is a difficult land to farm but it yields some of the finest stone and clay for bricks, and tiles, but the finest oils and the most noble wines.
Today, Fontodi is one of the leaders in Chianti, their wines have consistently impressed the critics; from the Gambero Rosso (the Italian wine bible), Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate (the American authority on wine), to The Wine Spectator (the most popular international wine/lifestyle publication), all of these publications have waxed poetic about the wines from this estate. The estate of Fontodi is on a hill just south of Panzano, from where you can look across the valley towards Rampolla and Cafaqqio. The gardens are full of Rosemary and in May the cuckoos are noisy. Since the Manetti family has owned the estate they have undertaken a major renovations of the vineyards. The young and talented owner, Giovanni Manetti, is one of the most far-sighted and intellectual grower-producers in all of Italy. His estate is enchanting, not only because of the villa where it is based is spectacularly beautiful, but also because Manetti has consistently made quality the first priority in all areas of the business, from rootstock, to trellising, to hiring the brightest mind in winemaking in all of Italy, Franco Bernabei. Franco has won more "Glasses" in Gambero Rosso than anyone in the history of the guide. Manetti’s greatest attribute is his common sense and his commanding personality which makes others stand up and listen.
The winery focuses its efforts on seven wines. Two Chianti’s, a Classico and a single vineyard wine called Vigna Del Sorbo. The Chianti Classico is 100% sangiovese and is the product of traditional winemaking. The wine is aged for six months in oak barrels, it completes its refinement in the bottle. It is a graceful, balanced, elegant, and stylish wine, but still easily to enjoy in its youth. The Vigna Del Sorbo Chianti Classico Riserva is a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon blended according to traditional methods and matured in small oak casks.
The flagship wine Flaccianello Della Piave, a 100% Sangiovese based wine which until the 2004 vintage this wine was made from a single vineyard surrounding the age-old parish church in Panzano, but from 2005 on it has become a selection of the best Sangivoese from the entire property. This wine is made with carefully controlled fermentation and strict temperature control during the initial stages. It is big and powerful wine yet retains a ripe, soft, seductive character.
The only white produced here is named Meriggio, it is 100% sauvignon blanc grapes vinified in stainless steel tanks, temperature-controlled and matured on lees for 6 months. This is the first time this wine has been exported to the U.S. and we are proud to be the exclusive retailer of this wine in South Florida!
Two of the smallest production wines with the Fontodi moniker are the Syrah and Pinot Nero cuvées bottled under the Case Via label. The Pinot Noir reflects the influences on Giovanni's wine education, having grown up at a time when Chianti was a much derided region, and he looked abroad to Burgundy, among other regions, for inspiration. The Pinot Noir vines were planted in 1985, as were the Syrah vines, during a period of youthful experimentation for Manetti. The Syrah is one of the best examples of this varietal made in Italy and can rival the Flaccianello in quality in great vintages.
Fontodi also makes a Vinsanto, an Italian dessert wine, this is a blend of malvasia and sangiovese grapes which are naturally air dried on straw mats until December. After a soft pressing the wine is aged for four years in four different kinds of wood (oak, chestnut, cherry and juniper) in cask that vary also in age and capacity. This wine has a yellow-golden color and a delicate fragrance of honey and hazelnuts. On the palate it is dry, warm, fragrant but suitably soft.

(96 Points) The 2020 Flaccianello della Pieve is the full package. This point is clear when you taste all the other wines in the Fontodi portfolio and conclude with this bottle. This organic Sangiovese shows beautiful intensity and remains balanced throughout with dark fruit, crushed stone, spice and wild rose. It borrows themes of elegance, depth and ripeness played across this vintage. The wine wraps smoothly over the palate with substantial fruit weight and sweet tannins. This warm-vintage expression can be aged or enjoyed straight out of the gate. Production is 60,000 bottles. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, September 2023

(98 Points) The 2019 Flaccianello della Pieve is another stunning wine that sums up the character of the vintage and reflects the sun-drenched beauty of its quintessentially Tuscan surroundings. Giovanni Manetti and his team have two new important wines in the works, but Flaccianello remains an old love and a wine that hits the highest marks for quality consistency vintage after vintage. I tasted this wine next to the 100-point 2016 vintage for friendly comparison, and perhaps the main difference is that the tannins are finer and more accessible in this bottle. It offers rich concentration and layers of dark fruit that wrap thickly over the senses. Tannin management is an active pursuit. Time in barrique has been reduced over the years in favor of a final six-month resting period in larger oak casks. In fact, the barrel room was recently enlarged to give more room to these bigger vessels. The 2019 vintage recalls the balance of 2001 with the freshness of 2013. However, 2019 is more profound. (98 points) “ Generally speaking, I have reservations concerning the 2018 vintage that saw intermittent periods of hot and cold with some rain thrown in at the end of the growing cycle. The 2018 Flaccianello della Pieve blasted straight through any lingering doubt and is the result of a deft winemaking hand. This is a phenomenal and proudly confident vintage of the estate's top Sangiovese, which represents a blend of organic fruit from the best parcels. The wine's personality reveals brooding darkness and austerity, and these impressions are reinforced by savory tones of cigar smoke and earthy leather. The core of the wine is tight and richly concentrated with generous blackberry and plum. The velvety tannins are integrated but still youthful and grippy. You'll definitely need to give this elegant wine more time in the bottle. Production is an ample 60,000 bottles. (ML) “ (10/2021) Wine Advocate

(100 Points) Fontodi's 2016 Flaccianello della Pieve is a masterpiece. This review represents a composite of notes from two separate tasting sessions, one at the winery and a second bottle tasted repeatedly over the course of 24 hours at my own pace. In the case of the second sample, it ended up in a blind flight next to the 2016 Masseto, and as beautiful as that Merlot-based wine is, this wine paints an even more beautiful portrait of a perfect Tuscan landscape, thanks to that tangy Sangiovese typicity. This vintage shows amazing depth and poise, with a sheer sense of elegance that comes from the undisputed quality of fruit achieved in this balanced vintage. The bouquet opens to dark cherry, blue flower and tilled earth. The tannins are taut, almost crunchy, and the wine offers profound pedigree and persistence that is driven by the evident acidity. That depth is what stands out most. Until the 2013 vintage, Flaccianello was aged in barrique for 24 months. After that vintage, six months of the total aging time is spent in botte instead. This 2016 vintage includes a small part from clay amphorae for the first time. This slight change in the relationship of wine to barrel size has resulted in a more elegant and finessed wine. That point is especially underlined in this vintage. Because of cool spring temperatures during the flowering, yields were reduced by 20% in 2016 compared to 2015. Some 65,000 bottles were made. (98 points) I'm hardly surprised to report that Fontodi's 2015 Flaccianello della Pieve is one of the best wines recorded in this report of new releases from Tuscany. This wine sits as tall and as proud as the Colosseum in Rome or the Pyramids of Giza in its undeniable glory and beauty. It would be impossible to exaggerate its many lasting attributes and qualities. Perhaps the most remarkable is the smooth and seamless nature of its many complicated moving parts. It produces abundant power, intensity and elegance as if this were the easiest accomplishment in the world. But we all know that's far from the truth. Despite the heat of the vintage, this wine is constructed with firm building blocks as if it were from a cooler year. That's the Panzano magic in a nutshell. This vintage is very young and tight, and you need to exercise patience to allow it enough time to evolve. (ML) (10/2018) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

(98 points) The 2013 Flaccianello della Pieve is a commanding wine and a strong protagonist of both the vintage and its territory. Connoisseurs of Sangiovese will be hard pressed to find a wine more authentic, elegant, complex and pristine than this. I am a huge fan of the 2013 vintage in Chianti Classico and the Flaccianello della Pieva is one big reason for this love affair. The bouquet is gorgeous and delineated with wild berry, tangy spice, crushed mineral and forest flower. Yet, the wine's color is dark, brooding and austere. The wine offers exuberance and energy in the mouth, thanks to its balanced acidity and seemingly never-ending finish. It should age forward for twenty years or more. Congratulations Fontodi.(ML)" (12/2016) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

(97 points) The 2012 Flaccianello della Pieve, a selection of the estate's best fruit, presents a darker, more virile expression of Sangiovese. Here, too, the purity of the flavors is truly striking. Cinnamon, cloves, new leather, licorice and plums are some of the notes that soar from the glass. The 2012 is full-bodied and voluptuous, in classic Flaccianello style, but the new French oak is much better integrated than it often is at this stage, the result of a move to lower toast levels over the last few years. This is one of the finest young Flaccianellos I can remember. Simply put, the 2012 Flaccianello is a real stunner. Wow!.. Antonio Galloni

(95 points) The 2011 Flaccianello della Pieve is 100% Sangiovese aged 24 months in new French oak and two months in large oak cask. I’m not sure how Fontodi does it, but this edition of Flaccianello is simply beautiful. It is a seamless expression with lingering tones of red cherry, coffee, spice, truffle and red rose that flow harmoniously into unison. In the mouth, the wine shows great opulence and textural richness that is pushed forward by the stylistic softness of the tannins and the wine’s inner freshness. Pretty menthol tones appear on the finish. Drink: 2015-2030. eRobertParker.com #215, Oct 2014

(96 Points) Now to a superstar of Italian enology: The 2010 Flaccianello della Pieve will take your breath away. This is a seriously beautiful Sangiovese-based wine with the kind of intensity and aromatic purity you only experience every 1,000 wines or so. There’s a lot to say here. First, the wine’s beautiful appearance shows dark garnet colors with highlights of ruby and purple gemstone. The bouquet delivers a steady and seductive evolution with dark cherry, chocolate, spice, tobacco and sweet almond all seamlessly balanced one against the other. Its texture and inner fabric is rich, velvety and firm. There’s a brilliant spot of acidity that hits you at the back of the mouth and helps the wine from feeling too heavy or dense. In fact, outstanding elegance is what ultimately sets it apart. The temptation to drink it now is huge, but those still young tannins definitely need a few more years to unwind. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035.
Fontodi’s Giovanni Manetti has released one of the top Italian wines of 2010. His Flaccianello della Pieve (assembled from the best parcels of Sangiovese) is an expression of profound beauty and elegance. I tasted this wine early in my work for this issue and found myself returning to my note over and over again, comparing the other great wines of 2010 to Flaccianello. It became my benchmark for the vintage. Wine Advocate #208, Aug 2013

(95 Points) The 2009 Flaccianello della Pieve is now hitting that very specific point in a wine's evolution in which you still identity some of the fruit, but you also get a supporting chorus of evolved aromas that enhance the overall finesse and depth of the bouquet. This wine is coming along beautifully and seems right on point in terms of its forward moving aging trajectory. Dried blackberry, cherry confit and plum are rounded out by spice, toast and bitter chocolate. The bouquet fires out on multiple sides, thus increasing the perceived complexity on hand. This vintage is very open and frank, and this is another endearing quality to admire. Interestingly, this vintage saw naturally high yields. Giovanni Manetti tells me they had to work very carefully in terms of green harvest and fruit selection in order to achieve this impeccable level of balance. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
2008 FONTODI FLACCIANELLO DELLA PIEVE TUSCANY
Price: $220.00 Your Price: $193.60
The 2008 Flaccianello della Pieve is quite pretty, even if it is a bit buttoned up. It possesses lovely perfume and sweet Pinot-like fruit backed by acidity and structure that are unquestionably those of Sangiovese. Today the 2008 impresses for its energy and verve. It should be a fabulous wine to drink in another few years, once the tannins settle down a bit. This is yet another 2008 that has grown considerably in stature over the last year. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2023.
This complete vertical of Fontodi’s flagship 100% Sangiovese Flaccianello was yet another of the remarkable tastings of my recent trip to Tuscany. Flaccianello is an interesting wine because the quality level that is the norm today only really starts around 2001. Prior to that the wines were very good, and sometimes even better than that, but not profound. In 2001 proprietor Giovanni Manetti made the decision to focus on his estate’s best fruit rather than making Flaccianello as a single-vineyard wine. Since then, Flaccianello has routinely been among the most exciting wines in Tuscany. Much of the fruit that now goes into Flaccianello comes from vineyards in the Pecille sub-zone of Panzano with a full southern exposure. Today Flaccianello is 100% Sangiovese, but the first vintages up to and including 1984 have 15% white grapes, as was common at the time. The early vintages up until 1990 spent about one year in French oak barrels, 50% new. In the mid-1990s Manetti increased the period of barrel aging to 18 months with the 1997, and then to 24 months with the 2006. Today the percentage of new barrels is close to 100%.

(95 points) The 2007 Flaccianello della Pieve captures the essence of this great Tuscan vintage. It is a decidedly sexy, opulent wine bursting at the seams with rich red berries, mint and spices. The tannins are present but virtually undetectable under layer after layer of fruit. There is no question the 2007 is seamless, opulent and full-bodied. Readers who prefer more structured wines will gravitate to vintages such as 2001 and 2004. I find the 2007 utterly irresistible. It will also drink better earlier than some of the most classic vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.

Fontodi Flaccianello Key Points:
1. 100% Sangiovese aged in French oak barrels
2. Since 2001 made from the estate’s best fruit across a number of vineyards in Panzano’s historic Conca d’Oro, prior to that a strict single-vineyard wine.
3. Flaccianello’s status as an icon wine is cemented beginning in 2001
4. One of the more powerful of the 100% Sangioveses from Chianti Classico
5. Aging potential: 20 years

The concentration and depth of fruit and layers of tannins leave me speechless. A blockbuster. Best after 2014.-J.S. Wine Spectator
The Flaccianello delle Pieve di Fontodi is positioned among the top of Tuscan wines, offering a truly extraordinary taste experience. Its intense ruby red color, with garnet reflections, is just the beginning of a unique sensorial journey.
This wine stands out for its rich and enveloping aroma, characterized by dark berries such as ripe cherries, currants, blueberries and blackberries. Accents of undergrowth, leather, vanilla and light spices help to create a complex and engaging bouquet. In the mouth it is robust, with ripe tannins that support a range of full and ripe aromas, culminating in a fresh and persistent finish.

(96 Points) Manetti-s 2004 Flaccianello della Pieve (100% Sangiovese aged in 100% new oak) is simply stunning. Fresh and vibrant, it offers compelling aromatics and endless layers of fruit that develop in the glass, with superb length on the palate and gorgeous overall balance. Although it is still holding back much today, make no mistake about it, Flaccianello is one of Italy-s blue-chip wines and the 2004 is a profound vintage for this wine. In order to enjoy its full range of expression readers will have to wait at least another five years after which it will provide memorable drinking to age 25, perhaps longer. 2013 FONTODI SYRAH CASE VIA TUSCANY
Price: $74.00 Your Price: $65.12 Quantity in Stock: 3
(95 Points) Like the Fontodi Pinot Nero, this wine shows enormous creativity and courage. The 2013 Syrah Case Via opens to a dark and impenetrable appearance with blackberry, bitter chocolate, cured meat, Indian spice and crushed black pepper. This wine is absolutely unique within its context. The tannins are plush and succulent. With so many excellent game dishes in Tuscany like wild boar and rabbit, I cannot imagine a better pairing partner. Only 6,000 bottles are made. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
2018 FONTODI PINOT NERO CASE VIA TUSCANY
Price: $80.00 Your Price: $70.40 Quantity in Stock: 4
(91 Points) The 2018 Pinot Nero Case Via is perfumed, racy expressive, especially on the palate, where the fruit is wonderfully alive. The 2018 was fermented in terra cotta and then aged in a combination of both amphora and oak. I find the tannins a bit edgy and battling the fruit at present. Then again, the 2018 was bottled only recently. I am less sure about the suitability of amphora for Pinot Noir than for other grapes given its inherent fragility. We will see. Vinous Media

2016 FONTODI FILETTA DI LAMOLE CHIANTI CLASSICO MAGNUM
Price: $90.00 Your Price: $79.20 Quantity in Stock: 2
(92 points) The 2016 growing season was cooler than 2015, resulting in a long, slow ripening and a later harvest. After finishing picking the Fontodi vineyards, Giovanni Manetti harvested this higher altitude plot in Lamole between 14 and 16 October. Earthy rather than fruit-driven, this wine gradually reveals cranberry bush, wild red currants and rosepetal aromas. While the frame is lean, the fine, chalky tannins build to support the sinewy fruit. A more angular expression than Fontodi but really should be appreciated in its own right. (MM) (2/2019) Decanter
2020 FONTODI CHIANTI CLASSICO
Price: $58.00 Your Price: $51.04 Quantity in Stock: 2
(92 Points) This flagship Chianti Classico from the renowned Fontodi estate has grown over the years to its current annual production of 170,000 bottles, however it has not lost its identity, deeply rooted in a sun-drenched stretch of Panzano’s Conca d’Oro. The 2020 version has all the ripe dark fruit and assertive tannins that come so neatly into balance. Grilled meat, baked earth and thyme flirt with black plum. The youthful juiciness has the energy to carry this over the next eight or so years. It finishes with its signature bitter liquorice twist. Decanter

2016 FONTODI DINO AMPHORA

(93 Points) The 2016 Dino is 100% Sangiovese done in terra cotta which brings out the wine's perfumed aromatics and bright acid profile. A touch of reduction -typical of wines done in amphora - adds striking character to play off the young Sangiovese acids and tannins. Dino remains distinctive if hard to place stylistically within the range as it is quite different from the other wines here. Vinous:

1998 FONTODI VIGNA DEL SORBO, CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA DOCG, ITALY
Price: $187.25 Your Price: $164.78 Quantity in Stock: 3
(94 points) Nothing in particular stands out in the 1998 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo, rather it is the wine's balance and overall sense of harmony that truly stand out. This is one of the smaller-scaled Sorbos in the vertical, but here, too, all the elements are in perfect balance. A soft, creamy finish rounds things out nicely. Although the 1998 isn't a huge Sorbo the flavors remain dark and vibrant throughout. The 1998 is a beautiful Sorbo, especially for drinking today. Its sense of proportion is much more classic than the 1999. (AG) (2/2014) Vinous

2012 FONTODI VIN SANTO 375ML
Price: $136.00 Your Price: $119.68 Quantity in Stock: 2
Rich, opulent, and wonderfully complex, this organic Vin Santo from Fontodi offers terrific complexity, profound aromatics, and a decadent drinking experience. Layers of dried figs, apricots, and raisins are dusted with cocoa powder and baking spices, drizzled with salted caramel, and shot through with orange zest and marmalade in this important Vin Santo. A blend of Malvasia and Sangiovese, Fontodi’s Vin Santo gives a nice balance among its elements — silky tannins, fresh acidity, juicy fruits, salty minerals, and lingering sweetness.
