If you have been paying attention to my propaganda over the years you know that Burgundy is one of my favorite wine regions of the world and I have been looking forward to this event for the last six months.
Domaine Leflaive is the gold standard for white Burgundy and when I received some older vintages of Chevalier and Batard Montrachet there was no question that these would be put on the table for a great white Burgundy event and this tasting just happens to coincide with the new releases from this great producer as the 2021 vintage is just now hitting the US market. The one thing you will notice about 2021 is the lack of wine, this was a very short vintage and the prices make 2018, 2019 and 2020 seem affordable. I have included all the Domaine Leflaive that we have in the store on this offering as well as all the white burgundy we have in the store on SALE!!

A bit about Domaine LeFlaive
When you look at the world's great white wines there is one area that stands out among all the rest especially for its aging potential- Burgundy, France. The great Chardonnay based wines from Burgundy are distinguised and the terroir of this region has been recognized as great for over 1000 years! Tonight we will be showing 16 wines from one of Burgundies highest regarded producers Domaine de Leflaive. Founded in 1717, Domaine Leflaive has long been considered one of the most highly regarded white wine growers in Burgundy. Currently under the stewardship of Anne-Claude Leflaive, the Domaine’s conversion to biodynamic farming in 1990 has produced remarkable results, raising the standard for one of the world’s greatest wines even higher.
Described by Clive Coates as, "doyen of Puligny and a man of great charm, wit, hospitality and winemaking genius" ("Côte d’Or- 1997), Vincent Leflaive and his brother Joseph (or Jo) took over after their father’s death in 1953. It was Vincent who acquired a tiny parcel of Le Montrachet in 1991, enough to fill one 500-litre cask. The domaine now comprises parcels in three of the four Montrachet grand crus, four of the best premier crus, including a large portion of Clavoillon, for a total of 23 hectares (57 acres) in all.
Anne-Claude Leflaive, Innovative, Meticulous, Caretaker of Vineyards
In 1990, Vincent’s daughter, Anne-Claude Leflaive, and Jo’s son, Olivier, became co-gérants of the domaine. Olivier, however, has concentrated on his négociant business, and, since the death of her father in 1993, Anne-Claude has run the domaine on her own. When asked by Clive Coates ("Côte d’Or- 1997) what she has changed at the domaine, Anne-Claude said, "I think the most important thing is our attitude towards the vineyards. Not only are we increasingly biodynamique, but the rest is biologique. We have used no fertilizers since 1989, nor herbicides either...We now regard each plot as a separate unit. In the time of my father, we tended to pick, say, all the Pucelles in one go. Now we treat and harvest all of them- and we have 38 separately."

2022 Domaine Leflaive Macon-Verze Le Monte

The 2022 vintage was ultimately an excellent surprise for all the winegrowers in Burgundy, in quantity and above all in quality. The hot, even scorching summer that we experienced made us wonder about how our vines would react. It is clear that they adapted very well, which allows us to be optimistic about this 2022 vintage. The weather was nice and warm in the first half of July, then hot with a heat wave on July 19 and 20. Fortunately the morning temperatures remained below 20°C. We experienced a third heat wave from August 1-4. From August 14, the weather became milder again with small daily rains which allowed the vegetation to finish its maturity. We began the harvest on August 25, which exactly met our expectations, allowing us to accelerate the harvest while allowing long pressings, beneficial for the quality of the musts.

Despite cool, rainy June weather, we anticipated a generous harvest. The summer was hot and dry, punctuated by a heat wave in August and much-needed rainfalls on August 17 and 22. Harvesting began in Puligny on August 20, yielding grapes in excellent condition with lots of juice and fruity aromas, a pleasant surprise considering the summer heat.

This surprisingly elegant yet substantial effort is from a unique Premier Cru in the Pommard appellation – located on the “La Petite Combe,” this vineyard maintains beautiful freshness and elegance in its fruit. The wine has the capacity to develop without a doubt, but it is well-balanced and expressive even now.

A beautiful fruitiness and a certain nerviness, this is a wine that gets straight to the point without falling into rusticity thanks to beautiful tannins and gentle extraction.
