Germany was once only known for their sweet white wines and although Blue Nun and Black Tower are not the rage today most people still think sweet and white when it comes to Germany. As far as Austrian wines go most people have never tried a Gruner Veltliner, nor can they pronounce it. Tonight we will turn you on to the latest and greatest from Germany- dry Rieslings and a few Eclectic whites and reds from their neighbor Austria. Chef Oliver Saucy will be sending out a few small courses to accompany the tasting wines. The fee for this tasting event is $35 + tax, for reservations call 954-782-0606.

Tasting Wines:
Germany

2007 Bernhard Eifel Riesling QBA MAX E.
Price: $20.00 Sale $17.60 Case $204

Talk about a great little QbA from Mosel! Around 11.5% alcohol, this beauty is clear with hints of gooseberry and wet stone. This is a wine that is made in Germany but made for the US market. Pretty decent nose of wet crushed white fruit with light floral notes. On the palate the wine is soft with high acidity. Has a great mouthfeel and a nice finish of crab apples. Good stuff. Tasted 5/09 - Santos Wine Journal

2007 Paulinshof Riesling QBA
Price: $$21.75 Sale $19.14 Case $222

The wine-growing estate Paulinshof is a former monestry firstly mentioned in 936. Since the time of Napoleon Bonaparte the Paulinshof estate turned into private ownership. Since the late 1960s Paulinshof is in possession of family Jüngling as well as some of the finest vineyards of the middle mosel - Kestener Paulinshofberger, Kestener Paulinsberg, Kestener Herrenberg, Trittenheimer Apotheke, Brauneberger Juffer, Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr and the Brauneberger Kammer, which is in the sole possession of Paulinshof. These steep, slate-rich, river valley hillsides cause a low yield and are the main reason for the outstanding quality of Paulinshof Riesling which is certified by numerous awards every year.

2007 Paulinshof Riesling "ROTSCHIEFER"
Price: $24.00 Sale $21.12 Case $245

The Weingut Paulinshof 2007 Rotschiefer Riesling is named for the Red Slate or rot schiefer that exists in the vineyard site. This is a fragrant Riesling with aromas of peach, pear, dark mineral (clayish) and some crisp apple and citrus. The palate is rich and vibrant with plenty of fruit in both the palate and long complex finish.

2007 Peter Stolleis Riesling SPATLESE ESELHAUF
Price: $26.00 Sale $22.88 Case $266

The Stolleis Estate in Gimmeldingen is situated in a former property of the elector Carl Theodor von Wittelsbach. Having grown wine from 1668, the Stolleis family bought this estate in the beginning of the last century. Today 23 hectares of vineyards in Gimmeldingen, Mussbach, Haardt, Koenigsbach, Ruppertsberg and Deidesheim belong to the estate.

Ernst Weisbrodt Riesling KABINETT TROCKEN

Kurt Angerer Riesling Ametzberg 2008
Price: $30 Sale $26.40 Case $306

(93 Points) Concentrated tropical fruit flavors of mango and pineapple fill this rich Riesling. There's a ripe appley note as well, with intriguing savory herbal elements. This really hums on the creamy finish. Drink now through 2015. 267 cases made

FX Pichler Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Urgenstein 2008
Price: $51 Sale $44.88 Case $520

The Pichlers' 2008 Gruner Veltliner displays a striking, bitter-sweet floral component, musk melon and lychee aromas, and a stony and savory, saline mineral depth. These elements are allied on the palate to a cool, juicy musk melon, sweet pea, mint, and honeydew melange. While ripe and textually lush, this finishes with a lovely sense of buoyancy along with the aforementioned mineral savor. It should keep well for a decade.

Markowitsch Pinot Noir Carnuntum 2006

Light- to medium-bodied, with delicate cherry and Santa Rosa plum flavors and plenty of bright spicy notes. The finish is crisp and juicy. Drink now. 150 cases imported.
